The Dawn Redwood is a very tall tree, reaching height of 75 to 100 feet, growing 40 to 50 feet in 20 years in good conditions. The bark is reddish brown when young, and becoming darker with long peeled-off strips when older. The leaves are deciduous, opposite, linear, flattened, and 1/2 inch long. They are bright green above and paler below, showing a slightly raised midrib. The cones hang on 3/4 to 1 3/4 inch long stalks, cylindrical, dark brown, and are 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches long. The Dawn Redwood was introduced from eastern Szechwan and western China in 1947 to 1948.
