Shortleaf Pine

Pinus echinata

Pinaceae (Pine) Family

State tree of Arkansas

This southern pine grows to be 50-80 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 4 1/2 feet.  The bark is coarse and broken into large square-shaped scales.  It is a dark reddish brown, and becomes grayer with age.  The needles are 2 1/2 to 5 inches long, deep olive, rounded, slender, and soft.  They grow in clusters of two (occasionally 3).  The long oval cone is one of the smallest of the Pines, growing only 2 inches long, and 1 inch wide.  The Shortleaf Pine can be found from New York to Florida and west to Texas, but it is not common on the coastal plain.  The main use of this Pine is for the interior finish and flooring of buildings.
