This dark-needled grows to a height of 50 to 75 feet with a trunk diameter of four feet. The bark is dark brownish gray, and red beneath. It has perpendicular seams, with smooth, thin, broad, flat scales. The trunk is straight. The large needle is flexible, dark green, 3-6 inches long, flat on one side, rounded on the other, and is found in clusters of two. The flowers appear in May. The staminate flowers are spiked and 5/8 inch long. The cone is smaller, 2 to 2 1/2 inches long, oval/conical shaped, and growing at a right angle to the branch. They stay on through the winter. The scales are thickened at the top, but have no spines. The Red Pine is found in light, sandy soils from Newfoundland to Pennsylvania and west to Ohio.
