(Western Yellow Pine)

Pinus ponderosa

Pinaceae (Pine) Family

State tree of Montana

Gift from Neil Tator

The Ponderosa Pine is one of the tallest Pines, reaching a height of 125 to 140 feet with a trunk diameter of six feet.  The bark is a light reddish brown, with thick, broad plates.  The needles are a deep yellow green, and 5-10 inches long.  They are slightly rough and usually 3 in a cluster, formed in heavy clusters at the ends of the branches.  The cones are either bright green (juvenile), or deep purple at maturity, 2 3/4-6 inches long, with the scale tips being very thick with curved-back prickles.  The Ponderosa Pine can be found from British Columbia and Montana to Texas and west to California, but not any further east.  This tree can reach an age of 350 to 500 years.
