Norway Spruce

Picea abies

Pinaceae (Pine) Family

This European tree grows between 40-50 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 2 feet.  It has remarkable long, pendulous branches and dark foliage.  The bark is a dark reddish brown, with rough, thick scales.  On younger trees, the bark is smoother with thin flaky scales.  The needles are a shiny dark green, four-sided, 5/8 to 1 inch long, curved and sharp. The cones are cylinder-shaped, very long (4-6 inches) and tan or light brown.  The scales are thin and stiff, broad, rounded, and sometimes square-tipped.  This tree is often found in many public parks and private grounds in North America.
