This is the state tree of Pennsylvania, and can be found in cold swamps, mountain slopes, ravines and rocky woods. The Eastern Hemlock is widely distributed throughout the Northeastern part of the United States, from Maine to Minnesota and south to Alabama. This is a medium-sized tree, the average height is 60 to 70 feet with a diameter of 2-3 feet. The needle of the Eastern Hemlock is the shortest and the darkest of all of the evergreens. It is flattened and a mere 1/2 inch long, and the cones are equally short. Scaly bark is a characteristic on young trees, but as the tree becomes older the bark becomes very rigid and deeply furrowed.
