The Bristlecone Pine reaches a height of 8 to 20 feet with an irregular spread.  It has a dwarf, shrubby habit.  The bark is grayish green and smooth when young, rust colored with cracks when older.  The leaves are five in a cluster, dark bluish green, stay on for 14 to 17 years, 1 to 1 3/4 inches long, with leaf sheaths that curl back and remain for 2 to 4 years.  The cones are oval, brown, 2 to 4 inches long, blunt, and have a prickle on the end of each scale.  The native habitat of the Bristlecone Pine is the southwestern US from Nevada to Arizona and New Mexico.
