The Common Lilac grows to a height of 8 to 15 feet, with a spread of 6 to 12 feet.  It forms a upright shrub with an irregular outline that has no lower branches with age.  The leaves are opposite, simple, oval, 2-5 inches long, entire, and dark green.  The flowers are lilac purple colored, and very fragrant.  They bloom from early to mid May.  They are formed on 4 to 8 inch stalks and in pairs.  There are over 400, but likely closer to 800 different clones.
