
This is a medium-sized tree, reaching 40 to 60 feet in height, with a trunk diameter of 3 feet. The bark is a deep, dull brown and smooth above, rougher below. The limbs are spreading and form an irregular, spreading top. The leaves are thick and dark green above, grayish and downy underneath. They are shaped like Laurel leaves elongated, oval, pointed, and bristle-tipped. They are 3-6 inches long with a slightly ruffled edge. The acorn is almost globular and shallowly set in a dish-shaped cup with close-pressed scales. The Shingle Oak is found from eastern Pennsylvania to north Arkansas, and west to Kansas.
