Eastern Redbud

(Redbud, Judas Tree)

Cercis canadensis

Fabaceae (Pea) Family

State tree of Oklahoma

This small, slender tree grows to a height of 15-25 feet with a trunk diameter of 10 inches.  The bark is deep brown, irregularly furrowed into small, thin scales.  The dark green leaves are nearly heart-shaped with a flat base, smooth and shiny above, paler and slightly hairy beneath.  The five large ribs come from the base.  The flowers appear before the leaves, are clustered along the branchlets, crimson, small, look like bean blossoms, and bloom from April to May.  The fruit is a long flat pod, about 2 1/2 inches with small flat seeds.  The Redbud can be found along streams from New Jersey to Florida and west to Texas.  This tree has no commercial value, only ornamental.
