The Sourwood is a small tree, 20-60 feet high, with a trunk diameter of 20 inches.  The trunk is straight, with grayish brown bark that is smooth above and furrowed below into short, broken, rounded ridges.  The dark green leaves are rounded and pointed, sharply fine-toothed, smooth, and 4-7 inches long.  They are also slightly paler beneath.  The flowers are 1/4 inch long and bloom from June to July.  The Sourwood is found in Pennsylvania to Florida and west to Indiana.
