This beautiful small tree grows to a height of 12-20 feet with a trunk diameter of 14 inches.  The bark is reddish brown and checkered.  The branches have an irregular, straggling habit, and the branchlets are curved upward with the large flowers on the ends.  The flowers are large, white, four-bracted, and have a pink or magenta tinge.  They bloom from May to June.  The round fruit is deep red.  The Flowering Dogwood is common in woodlands from Maine to Florida, and west to Texas.
