
This shrub or tree grows to be 15-30 feet high with a trunk diameter of 10-20 inches. The branches are horizontal or drooping. The leaves are deep green, leathery, evergreen, oval, and spiny. They are 2-3 inches long. The bark is light gray or brownish gray, smooth, but becoming rough with age. The flowers are white, in loose clusters at the bases of the leaves, and have 4-5 oval petals. The fruit is red, dull, berry-like, about 1/3 inch in diameter, short-stemmed, and stays on through the winter. The American Holly can be found in sheltered areas in sandy or moist soils, from Massachusetts to Florida and west to Texas.
