Norway Maple

Acer platanoides

Aceraceae (Maple) Family

In memory of Helen and David Lauer

This European Maple grows 45 to 60 feet tall.  It is similar in character to the Sugar Maple. The bark, however, is not similar.  It is dark brown, and much smoother and compact, the small, close narrow furrows running together to form ridges.  The leaves are broad, five lobed, the young leaves show a milky sap when broken, a way to tell the two species apart.  The fruit is very large (2 inches), broad-winged, with the wings almost opposite each other.  The wood is used in Europe for the interiors of houses.
